Kashmir’s saffron flowers bloom for only two to three weeks, usually from late October to early November, on the plateaus around Pampore, about 15 km from Srinagar on the Jammu road. Flowers are picked at dawn, so go early. Ask before walking into any field.
What you will see
Low purple crocus flowers cover the karewa plateaus. Families pick them by hand early in the morning, then separate the red stigmas — the saffron — at home. Kashmir saffron has a GI (Geographical Indication) tag.
How to visit
Pampore is on the way from Srinagar to Pahalgam, so most travellers stop for an hour on that drive. Sunrise to mid-morning is best. Weekdays are quieter.
Buying saffron
Buy only from trusted, labelled sellers. Real saffron colours water slowly to golden yellow, smells sweet-hay-like and the threads stay red. See our [guide to buying real saffron](/guides/how-to-buy-real-kashmiri-saffron/).
