During the Amarnath Yatra (dates set each year by the shrine board, usually around July–August), Kashmir stays open for tourists, but the Pahalgam and Sonmarg/Baltal roads see yatra convoys, timed movements and extra security. Plan those days with buffer time, book stays early, and expect busier Pahalgam and Sonmarg.
What changes for tourists
Some road stretches have fixed timings or convoys for yatra traffic. Hotels in Pahalgam and near Sonmarg fill early. Security checks are more frequent. Srinagar, Gulmarg and the Mughal gardens are largely unaffected.
How we plan around it
We check the official yatra schedule and traffic advisories before your trip, keep Gulmarg and Srinagar days flexible, and add a buffer day. If you are doing the yatra itself, see the [Amarnath Yatra guide](/pilgrimage/amarnath-yatra-guide/).
Should you avoid these months?
Not necessarily. Meadows are green and the weather is warm. If you want quieter Pahalgam, choose June, September or October.
FAQ
