The short answer

No single length suits everyone. Our plans run from 2 nights in one base to 9 nights across Kashmir and Ladakh. A first visit to Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam is built as 4 or 5 nights (5 or 6 days), and each extra place you add means more nights and more driving. What decides the right length is how many places you want to sleep in and how many hotel changes you will accept.

Scope and assumptions
  • Nights and days come from our package records. “5N/6D” means five nights and six calendar days, counting the days you arrive and leave.
  • Travel to and from Kashmir is not part of either number.
  • Seasons change what is possible, mainly Gulmarg in winter and the road to Ladakh.

Nights, days and usable sightseeing time

The day count includes the day you arrive and the day you leave, and both are only partly usable. Take our six-day plan, Srinagar – Gulmarg – Pahalgam, as it is written in the itinerary:

  • Day 1: arrive, check in and take a shikara ride on Dal Lake if your arrival time allows.
  • Day 2: a full sightseeing day, the Mughal gardens and the old city.
  • Day 3: the drive to Gulmarg, then the afternoon there.
  • Day 4: mainly the drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam.
  • Day 5: a full day in the Pahalgam valleys.
  • Day 6: the drive back to Srinagar for your flight or train.

So a six-day plan has two clear sightseeing days, two part days and two mostly travel days. We cannot promise a full sightseeing day after you arrive: it depends on when your flight or train lands.

Available time, route style and trade-off

Use the table to match the time you have to a route style. The plans named are examples from our package records, not recommendations for everyone.

Winter is different: the snow plans are 5 to 6 days built around Gulmarg, for example Kashmir Winter Snow, and they run in December to February.

When splitting the stay helps, and when it adds driving

Sleeping in a new place each time moves you towards the next sight, so the morning starts closer to it. The cost is a check-out, a drive and a check-in each time, and on a hill road that drive can take most of a day.

Staying in one base and visiting from there avoids repacking, but it adds an out-and-back drive on the same day. Most of our plans move in one direction. Two return to Srinagar: Complete Kashmir with South Kashmir after its night in Kokernag, and Winter Kashmir with Sonmarg after its Gulmarg nights.

If you want fewer moves, look at plans with longer stays, such as Senior-friendly Kashmir (three nights in Srinagar, two in Pahalgam). If you want to cover more ground, accept more changes.

How arrival and departure times change the plan

Check when you land before you count days. A late arrival leaves Day 1 for check-in and rest. An early departure means leaving the hills early on the last day, or ending the trip in Srinagar.

Trains now run to Srinagar from Katra and Jammu Tawi (train 26401/26402, extended to Jammu Tawi from 1 March 2026 according to a Northern Railway notice). Timings change, so check the current timetable on IRCTC or National Train Enquiry System before you fix your first day.

Seasons and fixed windows

Some choices have a window. The Ladakh road plans are suggested for June to September, and our winter Gulmarg plans for December to February. Check the season before you fix the length. Our when-to-visit pages cover each month.

A short way to decide

  1. How many days can you be away, counting travel days?
  2. How many hotel changes will you accept?
  3. Which places are must-haves, and which are nice to have?
  4. Are you tied to a season or a festival date?
  5. Which plan in the table fits those answers, and what would you drop if you had a day less?

Questions This Article Does Not Answer Above

Can I see Kashmir in three days?

You can see part of it. Our shortest plans are two nights, for example Aharbal & Shopian Orchards, and they stay in one base. Three or four days works best with one or two places rather than a full circuit.

Is one night in Gulmarg enough?

It can be, but it leaves no spare time if weather disrupts your plans. Some of our plans give Gulmarg two to four nights, for example Kashmir Winter Snow and Gulmarg Ski Week.

Can I add Ladakh to a Kashmir trip?

Yes, in the road season. Our combined plans run 9 to 11 days, for example Kashmir + Ladakh. They are not a short add-on.

Why do some plans return to Srinagar?

Because of where the roads and the sights are. A return leg lets you end in Srinagar for a flight or train, but it adds driving over ground you have already covered.
