  • Informational route guide
  • One-way road transfer (long)

Two ways to cross from Jammu to the Kashmir valley: a long road journey over the highway, or the Vande Bharat to Srinagar. This guide compares them; it is not a fixed-price transfer.

Main thing to plan for: The highway can close in bad weather, so keep your plan flexible on the day.

The Route

By road the journey climbs from the plains through Udhampur and the Patnitop and Ramban stretch, then passes into the valley through the Banihal–Qazigund tunnel. It is a long mountain drive and its duration varies widely with traffic, weather and works, so we do not quote a fixed time.

By rail, the Vande Bharat links Jammu Tawi and Srinagar via Katra, Reasi and Banihal. A rail journey and a road transfer are different services with different scope: the rail ticket is yours to buy, while a road transfer is quoted for a vehicle.

Travel Time and Stops

Driving time here is long and variable. Breaks for meals add to it, and any night halt turns the journey into a two-day plan. We would rather agree a realistic schedule with you than promise an arrival time.

  • Driving time: the time on the road between the pickup and drop-off points (see the summary for the one sourced figure and what it includes).
  • Planned stops: any stop you agree with us, which adds time.
  • Sightseeing: time at the destination, where the journey is a day trip.
  • Waiting: any time waiting for you, which your quote states.
  • Total time to allow: the sum of these, agreed with you for your date. We avoid precise arrival promises.

Route information last checked 6 October 2026. Sources are listed with each figure. This page does not state whether any road is open on a given day; confirm access for your travel date.

Pickup and Drop-off

Say whether you start at Jammu Tawi, the airport or a city address, and whether you end at a Srinagar address or the railway station. The reverse journey (Srinagar to Jammu) may have different timings and arrangements.

Your quote states whether it covers the airport or station, the town centre, your accommodation or a specific meeting point, and anything outside the standard route. We do not promise terminal, platform or doorstep access without confirmation.

Optional Stops Along the Way

These are optional unless your quote includes them. Each adds time and can change the quote.

  • Patnitop area A hill stretch on the highway; a common place to break the journey.
  • Ramban On the Chenab gorge stretch of the highway.

Choosing a Vehicle

For a long drive, comfort and boot space matter more than for a short transfer. Tell us the passengers and luggage and we will suggest a vehicle; we do not assume suitability from a model name.

Passenger capacity excludes the driver. Luggage is listed separately for each vehicle on its page. Compare vehicles

Price and Inclusions

Request a Quote. We do not publish a price for this route, because there is no fixed rate for it. A quote for this route is priced for your date, vehicle, passengers and scope.

Your written quote states whether the price is per vehicle or per person, whether it is one-way or return, the distance or hours it covers, and how it treats fuel, driver allowance, parking, tolls, taxes, waiting and extra stops. Where something is not stated, do not assume it is included.

Any rates shown elsewhere on the site are indicative. A transfer quote does not cover a full sightseeing day.

Seasons and Operating Conditions

This is the main road link to the valley and is prone to disruption from rain, snow and landslides. Closures are reported by the authorities for the day. We do not state whether the road is open now; confirm on the travel date. The rail link is a separate service with its own timetable.

General seasonal guidance is kept separate from current road status, which we do not publish. For official road and traffic advisories, check the J&K Traffic Police, the relevant district administration and the Border Roads Organisation on your travel date.

Questions About Jammu to Srinagar

Is the road or the train better?

It depends on your priorities and on the day. The train is a fixed-timetable option that you book yourself; the road gives door-to-door pickup but is a long drive that can be delayed by weather.

How long does the road journey take?

It varies with traffic, weather and works, and we do not publish a fixed figure. Your quote states the scope, and we agree a schedule with you.

Can we break the journey at Patnitop?

Yes, as an agreed stop or a night halt, which changes the time and the quote.

Does the Vande Bharat start at Jammu Tawi?

Yes, the Srinagar service now starts at Jammu Tawi and calls at Katra, Reasi and Banihal. Check NTES for the timetable on your date.
