Hilltop temple · Srinagar
After security checks on the hill road, you park and walk up a flight of stone steps (counts quoted vary; plan for 100–250) to the octagonal platform and shrine.
The Shankaracharya Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands on the Takht-e-Suleiman hill about 1,100 ft above the city. A 5 km road climbs from near Dal Gate, followed by stone steps to the shrine. Phones, cameras and bags are usually not allowed beyond the checkpoint, so leave them in the car. The view over Dal and the city is outstanding.

It's one of Kashmir's oldest temple sites and is especially busy on Maha Shivratri (Herath).
The panorama takes in Dal Lake, Hari Parbat and the Pir Panjal range on clear days.
