A shikara is a long, cushioned wooden boat paddled from the back. A one-hour ride usually loops past Char Chinari, the houseboat rows and the floating gardens; longer rides reach Nehru Park or the inner lake.
Dal Lake is Srinagar's heart: a large, calm lake of houseboats, floating gardens and shikaras against the Zabarwan hills. A one-hour shikara ride at sunset is the classic first evening. Board at the numbered ghats on Boulevard Road, agree the route and duration first, and go at dawn if you want the floating vegetable market.

The lake changes by hour. Mornings are glassy and quiet; late afternoons bring vendors paddling up with kahwa, saffron and papier-mâché. Sunset turns the water gold behind the Zabarwan hills.
In winter the edges can freeze in a hard cold snap. Rides still run on open water, but dress warmly: it's much colder on the lake than on land.
