The courtyard is calm and green; hundreds of deodar pillars hold up the prayer halls.
Jamia Masjid in Srinagar's old city is a vast wooden-pillared mosque around a garden courtyard, first built at the end of the 14th century. Around it lie the lanes of the old city: wooden houses, spice shops, bakeries and craft workshops. It's the part of Srinagar most visitors miss, and best seen on foot with a local guide.
The courtyard is calm and green; hundreds of deodar pillars hold up the prayer halls.
The old city lanes lead towards the Jhelum and Khanqah-e-Moula, past copper shops and traditional bakeries.
A half-day walk with a guide makes the history and crafts come alive.
