Is This the Right Kashmir–Ladakh Trip for You?

This itinerary suits travellers who:

  • Have nine nights available for the ground itinerary, plus the arrival and departure days around it.
  • Want Kashmir and Ladakh in one supported route, with the road journey between them rather than a flight.
  • Accept the transfer demands of the actual schedule: a short drive to Sonmarg, then two long road days, Sonmarg to Kargil and Kargil to Leh.
  • Are prepared to plan around seasonal access, because the road over Zoji La and the Ladakh sightseeing depend on conditions.
  • Want to understand the Leh sightseeing programme before booking: five nights, one rest day, three local sightseeing days and no overnight excursion.

The trade-off. This is a regional journey with several overnight stops. Review the travel days and activity requirements carefully, especially if your group needs shorter transfers or additional rest.

It is not a plan for everyone, and we cannot judge whether it suits your health. Ten package days do not mean ten sightseeing days: Day 1 is your arrival, Days 4 and 5 are mainly road, and Day 10 is the journey out. The Nubra Valley and Pangong are not part of it.

How the Kashmir and Ladakh Sections Connect

The route runs in one direction and does not double back.

Starting point
Srinagar airport or Srinagar railway station (Vande Bharat) on Day 1, where your driver meets you.
Kashmir section
Two nights in Srinagar (Days 1 and 2), then one night in Sonmarg (Day 3). Gulmarg and Pahalgam are not part of this itinerary.
Connecting road journey
Sonmarg to Kargil on Day 4 and Kargil to Leh on Day 5, both by road, crossing the Zoji La pass on the Sonmarg to Kargil leg. Both are travel days.
Kargil’s role
An overnight stop that splits the long road between Sonmarg and Leh. The only sightseeing there is the Drass War Memorial and Suru valley views on arrival.
Leh section
Five nights in Leh (Days 5 to 9): arrival, a rest day, then three local sightseeing days. Every day starts and ends in Leh.
Ending point
Day 10: a transfer to Leh airport. The trip does not return to Srinagar.

Overnight stops

  • Srinagar (2 nights)

Your 10-Day Kashmir–Ladakh Itinerary

Nine nights, ten days: Srinagar, Sonmarg, Kargil, then five nights in Leh, ending with a transfer to Leh airport. Each day shows where it starts, what is scheduled, what is optional or not included, and where you sleep. Meals are the ones the package record lists; your quote confirms them.

  1. 1
Day 1: Srinagar and Dal Lake seen from above

Starting point: Srinagar airport or Srinagar railway station (Vande Bharat), where your driver meets you. Transfer to your Srinagar stay and check in. If your arrival leaves time, the Dal Lake shikara ride listed in the package record can be taken this evening; if you arrive late it moves or is dropped, and your quote says how.

Timing: how much of this day you have depends on your arrival time; share your flight or train time. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  2. 2
Day 2: Nishat Bagh, a Mughal garden in Srinagar

Starting point: your Srinagar stay. Morning at the Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi), then the old city and Jamia Masjid after lunch, with the evening at leisure. All local sightseeing is by your private cab. Garden entry tickets are not included.

Optional: a local guide for the old city and gardens (separate). Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  3. 3
Day 3: Green meadow and forested slopes at Sonmarg

Starting point: Srinagar. Drive to Sonmarg (about 2.5 to 3 hours by the package record). The afternoon is for Thajiwas Glacier, on foot or by pony (ponies are not included), and views of the Sindh river. Stay on marked paths: ground at the glacier changes with the season.

Timing: about 2.5 to 3 hours of driving by the record; the rest of the afternoon depends on when you arrive. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  4. 4
Day 4: The road over the Zoji La pass

Starting point: Sonmarg. A full road day over the Zoji La pass to Kargil, with the Drass War Memorial and Suru valley views in the afternoon, then rest. Zoji La traffic is regulated and can be delayed or stopped by weather or road work, so the memorial stop and your arrival time depend on the day.

Route: crosses Zoji La, where traffic is regulated and weather or road work can cause delay. Driving time and distance for this day are confirmed in your quote. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  5. 5
Day 5: Leh town below the mountains

Starting point: Kargil. A long road day to Leh. Check in and take it easy: no sightseeing is scheduled on this day, and stops on the way are not part of the plan unless your quote adds them. This is the first of five nights in Leh.

Route: a long driving day; timing is confirmed in your quote. This is the first of five Leh nights, and the first night at about 3,500 m. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  6. 6

Starting point: your Leh stay. A free day: no transfer or sightseeing is scheduled. It gives the group a day without driving after the road journey, but it is not an acclimatisation programme and does not prevent altitude illness.

No transfer or sightseeing is scheduled. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  7. 7
    Day 7: Shanti Stupa, Leh

Starting point: your Leh stay. Local sightseeing in Leh: Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa at sunset, kept gentle. Entry tickets where charged are not included.

Timing: Shanti Stupa is planned for sunset, so the day is gentle. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  8. 8
Day 8: View over the Indus valley from Thiksey

Starting point: your Leh stay. Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, then Sangam and Magnetic Hill on the Kargil road, returning to Leh. These stops lie in different directions from Leh, so this is a long local day; your quote may split or re-sequence them.

Timing: the stops lie in different directions from Leh, so the day is long; your quote may split it. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  9. 9
Day 9: Leh town below the mountains

Starting point: your Leh stay. A drive up to Khardung La (at roughly 5,300 m) after the earlier Leh days, about 15 to 20 minutes at the top, then back to Leh the same day. This is a day trip: there is no overnight beyond Leh and no onward drive to Nubra.

Altitude: this is the highest point of the trip, reached after four nights in Leh. Permit requirements for Khardung La depend on nationality. Meals listed: breakfast and dinner.

  10. 10

Starting point: your Leh stay. Transfer to Leh airport for your onward journey. The itinerary ends in Leh and does not return to Srinagar. Flights are not included, so plan the transfer around your flight time.

Timing: plan the airport transfer around your flight time. Meals listed: breakfast.

Your final arrangements depend on arrival and departure times, availability and local conditions. Agreed changes will be included in your quotation.

What Is Planned During Your Leh Stay?

All five nights are in Leh. The record schedules three local sightseeing days, one rest day and one arrival day, and nothing else.

What is planned on each Leh day
DayPlanScopeTransport and charges
Day 5Arrive from KargilRoad day. Check in; no sightseeing.Included in the road transfer
Day 6Rest dayNothing scheduled.None needed
Day 7Leh Palace and Shanti StupaLocal sightseeing, Shanti Stupa at sunset.Local cab; entry tickets where charged are not included
Day 8Thiksey, Hemis, Sangam, Magnetic HillLocal sightseeing in more than one direction from Leh.Local cab; tickets not included
Day 9Khardung La short stopAbout 15 to 20 minutes at the top, back to Leh the same day.Local cab; permit or fee requirements depend on your nationality

Confirmed local sightseeing

  • Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa (Day 7)
  • Thiksey and Hemis monasteries (Day 8)
  • Sangam and Magnetic Hill, on the Kargil road (Day 8)
  • Khardung La, a short stop (Day 9)

Excursions, free time and options

  • Confirmed excursions with an overnight: none. Nubra and Pangong are not part of this itinerary.
  • Unallocated time: Day 6 is a free day. It is a rest day, not a medical acclimatisation programme.
  • Optional: a local guide or other additions, quoted separately. We do not add excursions just because they are common in Ladakh.

Day 8 combines monasteries to the east and south of Leh with two stops on the road to the west, so it is a long day. If your group wants a gentler pace we can propose moving the western stops to another day, which is a change to assess in your quote. Entry charges and permits are separate from the package, and the official requirements for Khardung La are on the Leh District permit portal.

Transport Across the Two Regions

The package record lists a private cab for the transfers and the sightseeing in the plan. How it works across the two regions is below.

What the record lists

  • A private cab for all transfers and sightseeing, with driver, fuel, tolls and parking.
  • Pickup at Srinagar airport or railway station on Day 1, and a transfer to Leh airport on Day 10.
  • Transfer days: Day 3 (Srinagar to Sonmarg), Day 4 (Sonmarg to Kargil), Day 5 (Kargil to Leh).
  • Sightseeing by the same cab in Srinagar and in Leh (Days 2, 7, 8 and 9).

Not assumed

  • That one vehicle and one driver stay with you for all ten days. Whether a vehicle or driver changes in Ladakh is not in our records, and local transport rules can differ between regions: your quote states it.
  • That a model is four-wheel drive. Our vehicle pages say which are not, and we do not promise access on a particular road.
  • A driver allowance as a separate charge: the record lists driver, fuel, tolls and parking as part of the cab, and your quote says how any other charge is treated.
  • Pony or local-vehicle charges at stops, which are paid locally and are not included.

We choose the vehicle from your passenger count, luggage and the route. For the Leh route our vehicle pages point to a higher-clearance SUV for small groups; that is a preference, not a guarantee of any road.

Vehicles to look at

See all cars and vans →

Accommodation Along the Route

Your quote names the proposed accommodation privately for each stop. This page does not name hotels and does not suggest the stays are alike: Srinagar, Sonmarg, Kargil and Leh are different places, and facilities differ between them.

Your quote will specify

  • Rooms and occupancy, and bed arrangements.
  • The meal plan for each stop; the record lists breakfast and dinner, and lunch is not included.
  • Heating, where relevant, and hot water.
  • Access: stairs, ground-floor rooms, and how close a vehicle can get.
  • Any material limitation at a property.

Not promised

  • Identical facilities at every stop.
  • Uninterrupted electricity, internet or heating, especially at Sonmarg, Kargil and Leh.
  • A particular category until the quote names it.

Tell us your room-sharing needs, children’s ages and anything practical about access when you enquire.

Prepare for the Demands of the Route

This route climbs. Approximate sleeping altitudes are Srinagar about 1,600 m, Sonmarg about 2,700 m, Kargil about 2,700 m and Leh about 3,500 m, with a short stop at Khardung La at roughly 5,300 m on Day 9.

The CDC Yellow Book says altitude illness is a risk for any unacclimatised traveller sleeping at 2,450 m or higher, that fitness does not protect against it, and that above 3,000 m the rise in sleeping altitude should be no more than about 500 m a night, with an extra night for every 1,000 m gained. On this itinerary the sleeping altitude rises by roughly 1,100 m on Day 3 and 800 m on Day 5, so the plan is faster than that guidance in places. Day 6 is a free day. It is not a promise of acclimatisation.

Please do

  • Ask your own doctor or a travel-health clinic about this route, especially with heart, lung, sleep or blood conditions, or if you are pregnant or travelling with children or older relatives.
  • Tell us if you want a gentler pace: an extra night is an option we can assess.
  • Read the official guidance linked above before you decide.

What we do not do

  • Give medical advice, medicines or clearance to travel.
  • Say that travelling by road prevents altitude illness.
  • Include oxygen, medical or rescue services: our records list none, so none is assumed.
  • Collect medical histories. The enquiry form does not ask for them: please do not send them.

Confirm Access for Your Travel Dates

June to September is the suggested travel period in our records. It is planning guidance, not a promise that every road, pass or place is open on your dates.

Roads

The route crosses Zoji La. Traffic over it is regulated by the authorities, and weather, landslides, cloudbursts and road work can delay or stop it, including in summer. We cannot see tomorrow’s road, so check the latest official traffic advisories before you travel, and keep some slack around Days 4 and 5.

Permits and nationality

The Leh District permit portal states that the inner line (Protected Area) permit applies only to foreign tourists, and lists areas including Pangong, Nubra and Khardung La. Day 9 of this itinerary includes Khardung La. Requirements differ by nationality and by place, and fees or registration for other visitors are published by the Ladakh administration. Check the official portal for what applies to you.

  • An enquiry is not a permit. We may help with the paperwork where your quote says so, but fees paid to the authorities are separate, and whether a permit is issued is the authorities’ decision.
  • We ask for your nationality only when we prepare the quote, and we do not guess it from where you live or your phone number.
  • We do not publish opening dates or universal permit rules here, because they change.

Adjust the Itinerary Around Your Priorities

This plan is a starting point. Tell us what you would like to change and we will say whether a feasible version exists. We cannot promise every change is possible, and we do not shorten the long road days to fit more in.

How requested changes affect the plan
If you ask forWhat it means
An additional nightA ten-night itinerary. We decide with you where it goes, for example an earlier rest night on the way to Leh, and check it is feasible. It needs a revised itinerary and quote.
Different sightseeing prioritiesWe can propose swapping or splitting stops, for example moving the western stops of Day 8 to their own day. The nights stay the same unless you add one.
Fewer stopsWe can propose dropping optional stops. The road days and the nights are what make the route, so removing them is a different itinerary.
A different arrival or departure arrangementFor example another arrival time or a different onward connection from Leh. We assess it against the schedule, and flights remain yours to book.
A different vehicle or room configurationChosen by passenger count and luggage. The quote is revised.
Nubra or PangongA different itinerary with its own nights, routing and permit check. The Srinagar to Leh road trip includes both; this package does not.

Questions About This 10-Day Trip

The plan is suggested for June to September, but access depends on conditions. We confirm the route for your dates before you pay.

No. The itinerary ends with a transfer to Leh airport; flights are not included.

Yes. Day 6 is a planned rest day in Leh, and the itinerary lists no activity that day.

Srinagar for two nights, Sonmarg for one, Kargil for one and Leh for five: nine nights in total. Day 10 is the departure from Leh.

Yes. Days 5 to 9 all end in Leh. No night is planned in Nubra, Pangong or any other place in Ladakh.

No. They are not part of this itinerary. Day 9 is a Khardung La short stop with a return to Leh the same day. If you want Nubra or Pangong, ask for a different plan: it needs its own route, nights and permit check, and the Srinagar to Leh road trip includes them.

It starts on Day 1 at Srinagar airport or Srinagar railway station, where your driver meets you. It ends on Day 10 with a transfer to Leh airport. It does not return to Srinagar, and flights or trains are not included.

Our records list a private cab for the transfers and sightseeing but do not say whether one vehicle and driver stay with you in both regions. Your quote states the arrangement, including any change of vehicle or driver in Ladakh.

Entry tickets are not included. No permit or permit fee is listed in the record, so none is assumed. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for some places Leh lists, including Khardung La; requirements differ by nationality and place. Your quote says what we help arrange, and issuing a permit is the authorities’ decision.
