Leh is about 3,500 m high, so rest completely on day one and take gentle walks on day two before going higher. Khardung La (5,359 m) and Chang La come later, with short stops only. Drink water, skip alcohol at first, and descend if symptoms worsen. Driving in from Srinagar via Kargil acclimatises you more gradually than flying.
The 48-hour rule
Day 1: rest. Day 2: Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa (drive up), easy walks. Day 3 onwards: Nubra or Pangong.
Symptoms to watch
Headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest, confusion or unsteadiness. Mild symptoms: rest and hydrate. Worsening: descend and seek medical help.
Special cases
Children, seniors and anyone with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before travel and plan extra rest days.
Road vs air
Srinagar → Sonmarg → Kargil → Leh climbs over two days; flying lands you at altitude immediately.
