Quick answer

Baltal is a valley beyond Sonmarg and the base camp for the shorter Amarnath Yatra route: about 14 km to the holy cave, steeper than the Pahalgam route. In Yatra season (3 July–28 August in 2026) it becomes a large, security-managed camp. Outside the Yatra it's mostly a transit point on the road to Zoji La.
