Kashmir vs Ladakh
Kashmir Valley and Ladakh are different trips with different altitudes and seasons.
The decision this page helps with: Which region should come first, or can you combine them?
The Short Answer
The deciding factors are your dates, how you handle altitude, and how many nights you have.
Choose Kashmir if…
- You want a lower-altitude first Himalayan trip: Srinagar is about 1,585 m.
- You are travelling outside June to September.
- You are bringing young children or older relatives and want to avoid early acclimatisation days.
Choose Ladakh if…
- You want high-desert scenery and can travel between June and September, its listed best months.
- You have five or six nights for Leh, Nubra and Pangong, with two easy acclimatisation days.
- You are comfortable with fees and, for foreign nationals, permits.
In summer, driving from Kashmir to Ladakh combines both and builds altitude gradually, if the Zoji La road is open. That is a plan to check, not a promise.

What Really Changes the Decision
Altitude and pace
Kashmir Valley’s base is Srinagar at about 1,585 m, with hill stops somewhat higher, so most travellers can begin sightseeing on day one. Leh is about 3,500 m, so our plans spend the first two days resting and taking short walks before going higher. That alone changes how many days a Ladakh trip needs.
Season
Ladakh’s listed best months are June to September. The Srinagar–Leh road over the Zoji La is seasonal, usually opening between late March and mid-April and closing in late December or January, with time-bound traffic during works. Outside the road season Leh is reached by air. Kashmir has useful months almost all year, though the experiences change.
Permits and fees
Leh’s administration continues to collect a green (environmental) fee and a wildlife fee from domestic tourists, and foreign nationals need Protected Area Permits for restricted areas such as Nubra and Pangong. Amounts and procedures are on the Leh portal; confirm before you travel.

Lower altitude and no acclimatisation days.
Road-trip enthusiasts travelling in July

Leans towards: Kashmir
Ladakh’s best months have ended and the road is closing.
Time, Route and Logistics
Nights and driving
Our nine-night combined plan runs Srinagar 2, Sonmarg 1, Kargil 1 and Leh 5. That is the ground package: your home-to-home holiday is longer once you add flights or trains to Srinagar and the journey home from Leh.
Arrival
There is no railway to Leh. Fly into Leh, or arrive in Srinagar and drive in the road season.
Cost Considerations
We do not have an equivalent Kashmir-only and Ladakh-only package of the same length and category to compare, so we do not quote a price difference.
What drives the cost difference: the number of nights and the days spent on long drives, the air or road leg into Leh, vehicle type (we usually suggest a higher-clearance SUV for Leh-side routes), and fees for Ladakh. Compare plans on the same dates, category and traveller count.
Can the Options Be Combined?
Yes, in summer. Our nine-night plan drives from Srinagar through Sonmarg and Kargil to Leh. It needs the Zoji La road open and spends five nights in Leh for acclimatisation and the circuits.

Kashmir vs Ladakh: Questions
Something else? Ask a planner on WhatsApp: +91 60058 51998 (9 am–9 pm IST).
Which is easier for young children?
Kashmir Valley, because it is lower. Ladakh needs rest days at Leh before going higher.
Can I combine them?
Yes in the road season, by driving from Srinagar through Sonmarg and Kargil to Leh. Our nine-night plan does exactly that.
Do I need permits?
Indian nationals pay a green fee and a wildlife fee for Ladakh; foreign nationals need Protected Area Permits for restricted areas. Check the Leh portal before you travel.
Which is better in winter?
The Srinagar–Leh road is closed in winter, so Ladakh is reached by air and is very cold. Kashmir has winter options such as Gulmarg’s snow season.
How we checked. The Ladakh fee and permit position was checked against the Leh administration’s notices on 6 October 2026; amounts are not quoted here.
