Summer vs Winter
A season comparison for planning, not a weather forecast. Conditions vary by year and by day.
The decision this page helps with: Which season matches the experiences, roads and comfort you want?
The Short Answer
Choose by the experience you want and by whether you need the road to Ladakh.
Choose Summer (May–August) if…
- You want green meadows and open valleys, and warm days in Srinagar.
- You want to drive on to Ladakh: the Zoji La road is seasonal and usually open in summer.
- You are travelling in school-holiday weeks and can book early.
Choose Winter (December–February) if…
- You want snow and Gulmarg’s ski season, which our records list as December to March.
- You are happy with cold and with confirming road and heating arrangements.
- You are not planning to drive to Ladakh: that road is closed in winter.
Neither season is universally better. Date-specific pricing and access are explained below.

What Really Changes the Decision
Roads and what stays open
The Srinagar–Leh road is seasonal. It usually opens between late March and mid-April and closes in late December or January, with time-bound traffic during works. That one fact decides whether a Kashmir plus Ladakh trip is possible by road. Sonmarg is reachable in winter through the Z-Morh tunnel, but the Zoji La beyond closes.
Comfort and planning
Summer days are warm in Srinagar and cooler in the hills; light layers and a fleece cover most of it. Winter needs real cold-weather gear, and heating varies by property, particularly on houseboats. Gulmarg may need chains after snowfall, and conditions can change a plan on the day.
What drives price by season
Our rate card groups months into Off, Shoulder and Peak bands. May, June, December and January are Peak; July, August and February are Shoulder; March and November are Off. The bands are planning guides, not guarantees of availability or of the cheapest dates.

Time, Route and Logistics
Nights and driving
Winter plans are often shorter on driving days and keep a spare day for weather. Summer plans can include longer drives, including the road to Ladakh.
Seasonal access
Always confirm access for the dates you choose: roads, passes and attractions can close with weather and works.
Cost Considerations
We compare bands, not totals, because our plans are not the same length or route in both seasons.
| Month | Rate-card band |
|---|---|
| May | Peak |
| June | Peak |
| July | Shoulder |
| August | Shoulder |
| December | Peak |
| January | Peak |
| February | Shoulder |
A like-for-like price comparison needs the same plan, nights, hotel category, travellers and vehicle on both dates. For one plan across seasons, see the April vs October page.

Summer vs Winter: Questions

Which season is better for a first trip?
Summer and the shoulder months are usually simplest for first-time visitors, because roads and sights are open. Winter suits snow and skiing if you are prepared for cold.
Is winter too cold?
It is cold. With proper clothing and a stay whose heating you have confirmed, many travellers manage it comfortably.
Can I go to Ladakh in winter?
Not by the Srinagar–Leh road, which is closed. Leh is reached by air in winter and is very cold.
When is it least busy?
We do not publish crowd scores. Holiday weeks, the Amarnath Yatra weeks and the New Year period are the busy times we know about.
