Gulmarg vs Pahalgam
They are Kashmir’s two classic hill stops and most five- or six-night plans include both. The real question is how to split the nights.
The decision this page helps with: Which hill stop should get your nights: the Gondola and snow, or the river valleys?
The Short Answer
Choose by what you want your days to look like, not by which place is more famous.
Choose Gulmarg if…
- You want the Gondola or a snow-and-ski base between December and March.
- You have only one night to give the hills.
- You prefer the shorter drive from Srinagar (about 50 km).
Choose Pahalgam if…
- You want slower days along the Lidder river and several valleys: Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari.
- You can give it two nights, which our notes suggest.
- You accept hiring a local union vehicle for the valleys, paid per vehicle.
Many travellers take both. Then the question becomes how many nights each gets.
Quick Comparison
Where we do not have a confirmed fact, the cell says what to check. No scores or winners are shown.
| Criterion | Gulmarg | Pahalgam |
|---|---|---|
| Signature experience | Gondola (JKCCC), meadows, ski area | Lidder river, Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari valleys |
| Altitude (approx.) | About 2,650 m | About 2,130 m (town) |
| From Srinagar (approx.) | About 50 km, 1.5–2 h | About 95 km, 2.5–3 h, longer in Yatra weeks |
| Nights our notes suggest | One night, or a long day trip | Two nights |
| Best months in our records | Dec–Mar (snow), May–Sep (meadows) | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct |
| Local vehicles | Tour cab to the Gondola base; ponies and guides at local union rates | Your tour cab stays in town; a local union vehicle is required for Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari |
| Seasonal notes | Phase 2 of the Gondola is weather-dependent; chains may be needed after snowfall | Chandanwari is seasonal and restricted around Yatra operations; confirm each year |
| Where guests stay (our stay zones) | Near the Gondola base, meadow ring road, Tangmarg | Lidder riverside, town centre, towards Aru |

What Really Changes the Decision
The Gondola against the valleys
Gulmarg’s day is built around one activity with a ticket and a time slot: the Gondola, with Phase 2 depending on wind and weather. Pahalgam’s days are looser: you walk in town, then hire a union vehicle for a day covering the valleys. That difference matters if you dislike fixed slots or if anyone in the group is unsure about heights.
How the vehicles work
In both places your tour cab does the Srinagar drive. In Pahalgam it does not take you into the three valleys: a local union vehicle does, priced per vehicle. Our destination notes put a full day covering Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari at roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500 per vehicle, but rates are set locally, so treat that as approximate and confirm before travel.
Seasons
Gulmarg’s strongest case is December to March for snow. Pahalgam’s listed best months are April to June and September to October. In July and August Pahalgam sits near the Amarnath Yatra operations, which can lengthen the drive and restrict some places; see the Pahalgam vs Sonmarg page for the 2026 yatra dates.

Time, Route and Logistics
Nights and driving
From Srinagar, Gulmarg is the shorter drive. Pahalgam is about 95 km, and the road can be slower in Yatra weeks. Going directly between the two passes back through the Srinagar area, so a route that visits both usually returns to Srinagar between them; the route guide has the detail.
Local arrangements
Plan for a vehicle change in Pahalgam and for Gondola tickets in Gulmarg. Neither is included automatically in a plain cab booking; your quote states what is included.
Cost Considerations
Our rate card has a nightly room rate for each place. For the same category and season, the two compare like this.
| Category and season | Gulmarg | Pahalgam |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, off season | ₹3,500 per room per night | ₹3,000 per room per night |
| Standard, shoulder season | ₹4,500 per room per night | ₹3,800 per room per night |
| Standard, peak season | ₹6,500 per room per night | ₹5,000 per room per night |
| Deluxe, off season | ₹5,500 per room per night | ₹4,500 per room per night |
| Deluxe, shoulder season | ₹7,000 per room per night | ₹5,800 per room per night |
| Deluxe, peak season | ₹9,500 per room per night | ₹7,500 per room per night |
These are indicative per-room, per-night rates, not final quotes. Meal plan, taxes and the package margin are stated in your quote.
Local costs are separate and are not in a room rate: Gondola tickets, ponies, and the union vehicle in Pahalgam.
Our rate card is still being finalised, so every figure here is an indicative planning guide, not a confirmed price.
Can the Options Be Combined?
Yes, and it is the standard pattern. Our five-night plan uses two nights in Srinagar, one in Gulmarg and two in Pahalgam; the four-night classic uses one night in each hill stop. Fewer nights mean less time in each place and more time on the road.

Which should I choose if I can only visit one?
Choose Gulmarg for the Gondola or winter snow, and Pahalgam for river and valley days. With one night only, Gulmarg is the shorter drive from Srinagar.
How far apart are they?
Both are reached from Srinagar and the road between them returns through the Srinagar area, so plans normally go back to Srinagar in between. The route guide gives the current detail.
Do I need extra vehicles?
In Pahalgam, yes: Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari are reached by a local union vehicle, paid per vehicle. In Gulmarg the tour cab takes you to the Gondola base area.
Which is better in winter?
Gulmarg is the snow-and-ski base, with December to March as its snow months. Pahalgam is cold in winter, and some places are seasonal. Confirm conditions for your dates.
