Gondola Phase 1 vs Gondola Phase 2

The Gulmarg Gondola, run by the J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC), has two phases.

The decision this page helps with: Which Gulmarg Gondola phase suits your group, weather and time?

The Short Answer

Phase 1 is the main experience for most groups. Phase 2 is an optional higher ride that depends on weather.

Choose Phase 1 if…

  • You are travelling with children, older relatives, or anyone unsure about heights.
  • You want the Gondola with the least weather risk.
  • You want snow play near the middle station in winter.

Choose Phase 2 if…

  • You are fit, comfortable at height and dressed for cold and wind.
  • You are going on a clear day and can be flexible if it pauses.
  • You are an experienced skier or want the high ridge views.

Treat Phase 2 as a bonus rather than the plan: it can pause on windy days, so keep Phase 1 as the fallback.

What Really Changes the Decision

What changes between the phases

Phase 1 takes you from Gulmarg to Kongdoori, the middle station. Phase 2 continues higher towards Apharwat. The extra height brings wider views across the Pir Panjal on clear days, and also more cold and wind. Apharwat is a ridge, not a meadow: dress for it even in summer.

Weather and flexibility

Phase 2 is weather-dependent and pauses on windy days. If you plan only for Phase 2 and it pauses, you will have lost the main part of the day. A flexible plan has Phase 1 as the guaranteed-by-weather-least-risk option and Phase 2 as a bonus. Take the first slot where you can: our place notes say afternoons are windier and busier.

Health and children

We do not advise Phase 2 for young children or for anyone with heart or breathing problems, and descending early is the right choice if anyone feels breathless or dizzy.

Who Each Option Suits

Illustrative examples, not customer stories.

  • A family with a five-year-old in December

    Leans towards: Phase 1

Snow play near Kongdoori without the extra height.

  • Fit adults on a clear summer morning

Leans towards: Phase 1 and Phase 2

High ridge views; keep Phase 1 as the fallback if Phase 2 pauses.

  • A senior with a heart condition

    Leans towards: Phase 1 only

Phase 2 is high and cold; speak to a doctor before any high-altitude ride.

Time, Route and Logistics

Time and slots

Plan a morning for the Gondola and keep the rest of the day flexible. Phase 2 queues and weather can change the schedule. Staying a night in Gulmarg near the Gondola base lets you take the first slot.

Booking

Tickets are sold through the official JKCCC channel; check it for current fares, ID rules and slots. We do not sell Gondola tickets; in our plans the guest books them.

Cost Considerations

Fares are set by JKCCC and change; published figures differ between sources, so we do not quote them.

What drives the difference: Phase 2 is a second ticket on top of Phase 1, with its own weather risk. If it pauses, ask the operator what happens to your ticket before you buy.

Can the Options Be Combined?

Yes: Phase 1 and Phase 2 are normally ridden in one trip, Phase 2 depending on the weather. Our winter plan spends two nights in Gulmarg, which gives a second chance if the first day is windy.
