Srinagar's shrines are living places of prayer: Hazratbal on the shore of Dal Lake, the carved wooden Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, Makhdoom Sahib on Hari Parbat, Dastgeer Sahib in Khanyar and the great Jamia Masjid in the old city. Charar-e-Sharif lies outside the city in Budgam. Visit outside prayer times, dress modestly and follow the shrine's rules for women and photography.
At a glance
A half-day old-city route
Start at Jamia Masjid, walk to Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, then Dastgeer Sahib in Khanyar; end at Makhdoom Sahib on Hari Parbat for views. Hazratbal fits best with the Mughal gardens day, combined with a shikara.
Etiquette
Cover shoulders and legs; women should carry a scarf. Remove shoes where asked. Some inner areas may be closed to women or to photography — follow the shrine staff.
