The Baltal route is the shortest way to the Amarnath cave — about 14 km one way from the Baltal base camp near Sonmarg, steep in places. Fit pilgrims often walk up and return the same day; others use ponies, palkis or the SASB helicopter to Panjtarni. Plan a night near Sonmarg or at Baltal camp before you start.
At a glance
How the day works
Pilgrims leave Baltal early within the permitted timings, pass Domail and Barari, and reach the cave by late morning or afternoon depending on pace. After darshan you return the same way. Gates and timings are controlled for safety; follow the instructions at the camp.
Ponies, palkis and helicopter
Ponies and palkis are available from registered providers at official rates displayed at the camp. The helicopter (Baltal–Panjtarni) is booked only through SASB. Panjtarni is about 6 km from the cave.
Our usual plan
Day 1 Srinagar → Sonmarg/Baltal (stay). Day 2 Yatra and return to Baltal/Sonmarg. Day 3 back to Srinagar with a buffer. See the Baltal package.
Official bookings and our role
We are a private trip planner, not a shrine board. Registration, permits, helicopter tickets and darshan slots are only through the official shrine board channels; we help you plan around them.
FAQ
The walk is steep. Seniors usually choose a palki or the official helicopter, subject to the health certificate and age rules.
