Pahalgam vs Sonmarg
They sit on opposite sides of Srinagar and are usually used differently.
The decision this page helps with: Which fits better: a two-night base with several valleys, or a glacier day trip?
The Short Answer
The deciding factor is usually whether you want to stay or to visit.
Choose Pahalgam if…
- You want a base for two nights with the Lidder river and several valleys.
- You do not mind hiring a local union vehicle for Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari.
- You are travelling in April–June or September–October, its listed best months.
Choose Sonmarg if…
- You want the Thajiwas glacier and the Sindh river as a day out from Srinagar.
- You are driving to or from Ladakh on the Zoji La road.
- You are visiting between May and October, its listed best months, or in winter when the Z-Morh tunnel keeps it reachable.
Both are affected in Amarnath Yatra weeks, Pahalgam on the Pahalgam route and Sonmarg on the Baltal side. Dates change yearly.

What Really Changes the Decision
Stay or visit
Pahalgam works as a base because the interesting places are several short trips from town: a day with a union vehicle can cover Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari, and a second night makes the pace unhurried. Sonmarg has one main sight, the glacier walk, so most visitors see it in a day from Srinagar; one night suits summer when you want an early start.
The Yatra effect
The Amarnath Yatra uses routes through Pahalgam and Baltal, near Sonmarg. In those weeks traffic and restrictions change, which is why our notes flag Pahalgam’s drive as longer and Chandanwari as restricted around Yatra operations. Check the Shrine Board for your year’s dates before you fix a plan.
Winter
Sonmarg’s winter story changed with the Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, which keeps the town connected. Pahalgam stays quieter and colder; our records list no snow-specific activity there. Neither can be promised open on a given winter day.
Who Each Option Suits
Illustrative examples, not customer stories.
A four- or five-night trip with room for one hill base
Leans towards: Pahalgam
Two nights spread over several valleys; Sonmarg can still be added as a day trip.
A summer visitor who wants snow underfoot
Leans towards: Sonmarg
In June our notes show snow near the glacier path.
A road-trip group heading on to Ladakh
Leans towards: Sonmarg
It is on the road, so a short stop costs little extra distance. The Zoji La must be open.
Time, Route and Logistics
Time and nights
Both start from Srinagar and are about 2.5–3 hours away. They lie on opposite sides of the city, so a trip that wants both needs a return through Srinagar between them; the route guide gives the detail.
Arrival
Most guests arrive at Srinagar. Anantnag railway station is closer to Pahalgam, but we do not publish train timings there until they are checked.

Our six-night Srinagar–Sonmarg–Pahalgam plan includes both on one route, so you do not have to choose between them if the nights allow.
Our rate card is still being finalised, so every figure here is an indicative planning guide, not a confirmed price.
Can the Options Be Combined?
Yes. Our five-night plan runs Srinagar 2, Sonmarg 1, Pahalgam 2. Sonmarg is on the Srinagar side of the route, so it adds a night rather than a detour.
