Gulmarg vs Sonmarg
Both are high meadows north of Srinagar, but each is built around a different day out.
The decision this page helps with: Which high meadow fits your time, season and group?
The Short Answer
Neither is better for everyone. Which one fits depends mostly on the season and on whether you want an overnight stay or a long day trip.
Choose Gulmarg if…
- You want the Gondola, run by the J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC), or a snow-and-ski base between December and March.
- You would like one calm night close to Srinagar (about 50 km) rather than a long day on the road.
- You prefer a shorter drive: about 1.5–2 hours from Srinagar.
Choose Sonmarg if…
- Your priority is the Thajiwas glacier, reached on foot or by pony, and the Sindh river.
- You are travelling to or from Ladakh on the Zoji La road, which passes Sonmarg.
- You are comfortable with about 2.5–3 hours each way as a day trip, or with adding a night in the warmer months.
If none of these decides it, send us your dates and who is travelling. The season is usually what tips the choice.

What Really Changes the Decision
What each day involves
Gulmarg is organised around the Gondola. Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoori and Phase 2 climbs towards Apharwat. Phase 2 is higher, colder and weather-dependent, and it can pause on windy days; we do not advise it for young children or for anyone with heart or breathing problems. Sonmarg is organised around the walk or pony ride to the Thajiwas glacier along the Sindh valley. In June our notes show snow still lying near the glacier path.
Winter is where they differ most
Gulmarg is the established snow-and-ski base, with December to March listed as its snow months. Sonmarg used to be cut off for much of the winter. The 6.4 km Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, inaugurated on 13 January 2025, keeps Sonmarg connected, so it is now reachable in winter, but the Zoji La beyond it still closes. Whether either road is passable on a given day depends on snowfall and traffic arrangements, so we confirm before you set out.
Overnight or day trip
A night in Gulmarg is calmer than a day trip, because the Gondola queues are shortest early. Sonmarg is more often a day out from Srinagar; a night there makes sense mainly in summer when you want an early start for the glacier. Each option changes the trip differently: Gulmarg adds a hotel change about 50 km out, Sonmarg adds a longer drive on the same day.
Who Each Option Suits
Illustrative examples, not customer stories.
A couple adding snow to a December stay in Srinagar
Leans towards: Gulmarg
December to March are its snow months and the Gondola is the main draw.
A group driving on to Ladakh in summer
Leans towards: Sonmarg
It is on the road, so it fits as a stop rather than a detour. The Zoji La must be open.
A family with one free day near Srinagar in June
Leans towards: Either
Choose the Gondola if the children are comfortable with heights; choose the glacier walk or pony ride if they like being outdoors. Ask us about your children’s ages.
Older travellers who are short on time
Leans towards: Gulmarg, Phase 1 only
The drive is shorter, and Phase 2 can be skipped. Sonmarg is a longer day.
Time, Route and Logistics
Time and nights
Gulmarg: about 50 km, 1.5–2 hours from Srinagar. Sonmarg: about 80–87 km, 2.5–3 hours. Doing both on one base is possible only if you accept one long day; a more relaxed plan spends a night in one and visits the other as a day trip.
Arrival days
From Srinagar railway station Gulmarg is about 50 km and Sonmarg roughly 80–90 km, so arriving by train and going straight up works better for Gulmarg.
Cost Considerations
The cleanest like-for-like comparison in our plans is two six-day routes that differ only in the middle stop.
| Rate-card season | Srinagar – Gulmarg – Pahalgam | Srinagar – Sonmarg – Pahalgam |
|---|---|---|
| Off season | ₹21,499 | ₹20,999 |
| Shoulder season | ₹25,899 | ₹25,299 |
| Peak season | ₹31,499 | ₹30,599 |
Per person, twin sharing, Deluxe stays, 5 nights / 6 days each. Season windows differ: Srinagar – Gulmarg – Pahalgam Mar–Nov; Srinagar – Sonmarg – Pahalgam Apr–Oct.
Both plans are 5 nights / 6 days with 2 nights in Srinagar and 2 in Pahalgam, twin sharing, breakfast and dinner, and a private cab. The only change is one night in Gulmarg or in Sonmarg.
Not in either price: Gondola tickets (booked by the guest), ponies, guides and local union rates at the meadows.
Our rate card is still being finalised, so every figure here is an indicative planning guide, not a confirmed price.
Can the Options Be Combined?
Yes, if you give it the nights. Our six-night family plan has one night in Sonmarg and one in Gulmarg alongside two nights each in Srinagar and Pahalgam. Alternatively, spend the night in one and visit the other as a day trip from Srinagar.
